How do I stop spiraling into anxious what-if thoughts?

He calls it the 'thought-nado': the devil poses a what-if, the person engages it, and the devil pounces with the next what-if until the mind is spinning in a cyclone of anxiety, fear, and despair over things that have not happened. His example is a college application spiraling into imagined rejections, lost internships, and joblessness. The answer to every what-if, he says, is 'I will have faith in God no matter what happens' — the spiral only forms when a person starts talking with the thought instead.
