Do I need to take real rest, or should I be grinding every day?

Pace is the flow of life. Now, there are so many videos today on maximizing your life that are unrealistic. Maximizing your day leads frequently to burnout. I noticed when I used to do construction that if I worked a 16-hour day and the next day I worked eight hours, the eight hours was so difficult to get through and productivity was so low, that if you combine the two, I probably was better off just working two 10-hour days than trying to fit a 16-hour day in, because the mental and physical fatigue was so much. They actually had a study on this that they did during World War II, where they tried to have people work more hours in order to accomplish what they were doing in 40 hours. They were doing something in 40 hours, and then they were trying to add significantly more hours to see if they could produce more. And they said what ended up happening is, people, because of mental and physical fatigue, productivity would drop off, and it would end up averaging about the same. So they worked more hours but they didn't get more done. You want to make sure your bang for buck is good. You're mentally focused, you're alert, you're awake, you're able to do things. And your brain can only do so much of that every day. So you've got to make the time that you have count, because you need work. And then you need to do a hobby, something that's fun, something that enriches your life, something that gives you a sense of joy and a feedback to life that is like the carrot in life. And then you need rest. You need times where you're resting, where you're allowing yourself to do something that doesn't need to be negative, and it doesn't need to be out of balance. But as our Lord said in the Gospels, the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Taking a rest is God's gift to us, because he knows that we can't be all gas and no brakes. When people do that, and I see this, they end up burning out mentally and emotionally, and sometimes it's even catastrophic. So you need to learn a good pace for life. And everyone's pace is going to be a little bit different. Some people have greater mental abilities, some people have greater physical abilities. But the reality is that you may say, hey, I'm going to make phone calls today for six hours, and then realize three hours of phone calls is your limit. That's okay. You've got to find the right pace, and you've got to switch up your activities so that you're able to continue on with a good healthy schedule that is shooting for your goals.
