The Passions
How do I stop letting people push my buttons?
Now, does this happen overnight? Lord have mercy. No, this does not happen overnight. This takes years, if not decades, of struggle and striving in the direction to cultivate that spiritual awareness and that spiritual presence, so that we're able to remain peaceful and unfazed by the things that used to perturb us. When we have somebody who says, oh, I'm upset because somebody did this, what they're really saying in some ways is, that person is pushing my buttons. As long as we have buttons that can get pushed, they are going to be pushed by this world and by this life. And as long as our buttons are getting pushed and our thoughts are going along with it, then our emotions are going to follow after it, and then we're going to continually have this tumultuous existence, because we're not rooted. The spiritual life is moving away from the psychological emotional to the much deeper kind of resonance or harmony of the soul and of the heart. We have to get rid of our thoughts and these things that bother us. We have to get rid of the buttons. When we have the buttons that can get pushed, whatever they are, we will be susceptible to them. I'll give you an example. Some people are very susceptible to bad drivers. That is their button. When they encounter a bad driver and the button gets pushed, they go up into the atmosphere. Anger, rage, cussing, hitting their steering wheel, maybe even gesturing at the other person. They become infuriated by it. But if a person can take away the button and simply say to themselves, everyone here driving is doing the best they can with whatever they have. Maybe they have other things that are going on in their day. Maybe they're rushing home because their wife is in labor. Maybe they have a child who's sick and they're trying to get to the hospital. Maybe they've had a terrible day at work and they're replaying a conversation in their mind and they're not paying attention. When we begin to get rid of the button and then somebody does something, what do we do? God bless them. God have mercy on them. That's what Christ means when he says, bless your enemies. Because some people make other drivers their enemies, and then when the driver does something, even when they don't mean to, that person goes into a rage against the enemy. But it's only a perceived enemy. It's not a real enemy. It's just somebody who's making a mistake or doing the best they can, and maybe it's not that great. So it is that we have to file away the button and get rid of it, so that we can remain calm and peaceful when we're driving, when we're in the supermarket, when we're interacting with our children, when we're going about life and doing the day-to-day things. Too many buttons means too much up and down. But the spiritual person in that state of repentance is looking to whittle away and get rid of those buttons until they don't exist and they can't be pushed.
