What do I do when I feel like I don't have enough faith?
So often people are like, Father, I feel like I lack faith. That's true, that happens to all of us. But what I notice so often is people lack actual execution. They are not executing on the faith. They are not walking into the dark. It's very easy to say to God, I don't know if you're going to come through. That's true. But if you don't walk out on it, if you don't take the steps of faith, how can God show up? If God says, I want you to walk through this dark forest, this temptation in life that's before you, your husband just lost his job, you're pregnant, this is going on, you don't know how it's all going to come together, what happens if we just say, oh, I don't know if I trust or not? Well, then we just sit on the edge of the forest and we never walk through it. And then we're riddled with anxiety, uncertainty, thoughts. Our thoughts become all over the place. It's a torment, it's a torture. Faith includes walking into the unknown, but it's walking into the unknown with the hope that God will reveal himself, that God will see us through, and that everything will come about. I can tell you, I've had several very challenging experiences as a priest where I did not know what was next. I didn't know where we were going to move, or how we were going to move there, or how we were going to pay for things when we got someplace. And I can tell you, in those moments, if you said, do you have a lot of faith, I would have said, I'm pretty challenged right now. I believe, help me with my unbelief, because I have to walk through it. I have to walk through an uncertainty, and that's okay. But we keep walking forward. That is the main thing. So often people kind of cut off their leg by saying, well, I don't have faith, and then they just throw up their arms and flail about. That's not faith. Faith is, Lord, I see that there's a way forward. I don't know what it is. I don't understand. But I am going to try my best to put this into your hands, and to cling to you in prayer, and to continue to walk forward, knowing that I am walking into the dark forest of life with uncertainty and the unknown and fears and thoughts and anxiety and everything else, and I just want you to know, I am relying on you. I am not going to rely on myself. Please show me what to do next. When somebody lives like that, guess what happens? You end up building faith, because faith is like a muscle. If it never gets worked, you just don't have any.
