What does it actually mean to believe in God?
I think belief in God is just the acknowledgement of the reality of his existence. But as it famously says in scripture, I believe, Lord, help me with my unbelief. So no one has a perfect belief or a perfect faith, whatever that is. On some level it's just acknowledging the reality that Christ existed, that he came in the flesh, he came to save sinners, of whom I am first. Some of it is just an acknowledgement. Faith is believing in that which is unseen. Christ says, blessed are you who have seen and believe, but even more blessed are those who have not seen yet believed. So I feel like with God, the existence of God, I don't even feel like I believe in God. I just believe that God is. It would be like if you asked me, do you believe in your wife? I'm like, what does that even mean? Like, I know that she exists. I know that she is. It's just a reality. That's, I think, a big part of it. Just acknowledging the reality of God, and not trying to run away from it or make it into something psychological or something else. And then when we have struggles and questions, to not be afraid of them. You always know that something is bad when somebody says you can't question it. This is why Thomas is commemorated during the year, and the church fathers say that Thomas was never denigrated due to his questioning. That God acknowledged his questioning. So don't be afraid to question. We have to do it with humility and seeking an answer. God doesn't expect us to be robots. He meets us where we're at. In fact, St Paisios has a beautiful saying on this, where he says, if someone prays sincerely and says, God, if you reveal yourself to me, I will serve you for the rest of my life. He says, if they pray in a sincere fashion from the heart, God will answer that prayer. The interesting thing is, I've talked to people and told them that, and I can see in their face they don't want to go and pray that. Because they don't want to serve God. That's an issue of the heart, not an issue of the mind. With their heart they don't wish to serve God, and so they are going against it.
