Manhood
Where should a young man put all his pent-up energy?
That ties directly into our energy. Much like I was saying with the mental and the physical, when our energy gets stored up inside of us it just tends to go all over the place in negative directions. In fact, one of the reasons that we see in the monastic life that there's such a big emphasis on physicality and physical work is that the mind can be clear and the person's able to pray, but also it kind of drains the body of your energy. And as we all know as men, when that energy is not used for something positive, it has a tendency to go to something negative. And especially when young men are living a primarily sedentary life, it's great for them to have something to do that gets all of the pent up anxiousness and energy and restlessness out of their system, so it doesn't go to something like lust, so it doesn't go to something like video games where they're just wasting away their time not doing anything. Men today are not going to become bricklayers. Typically a lot of men are going to end up doing a job that is going to have kind of a high degree of sedentariness. Like my job as a priest now is very sedentary. I stand for the services, but a lot of my time is spent on phone calls or visiting with people or whatnot, but it's not a very active life. When I used to be a commercial roofer, every day I was working 7am to 5pm, and that physical life was fantastic. The problem today is a lot of those physical jobs simply don't provide enough income so that you're able to support your family. But if you're able to get into a trade early on that's not going to destroy your body, that's an awesome way to stay physical and get that energy out all day, so that when you come home at the end of the day you're not all built up, you're not all pent up with energy and angst. Because a person who's been sitting and doing stuff all day, they come home, their mind is fatigued but their body is very restless, and that energy has to find a release.
