Why do I always want more stuff?

I want to talk about three of these. Inordinate affection. It's easy for us to see something like fornication, and it becomes very obvious to us when we say, oh, that's correct, we need to put away fornication, or fornication is not part of the Christian life. That one can be very, you could say, obvious. But one that I think is less obvious, and it actually has more to do with our life in North America and more to do with kind of our consumerist culture in which we live, is inordinate affection. So often times we kind of see that it is, how can we put it, almost like a right in the American mindset to kind of go after more and more and more. We talked about this recently with the bigger barns. This notion in the American concept, we even say go big or go home. This idea is constantly doing more and more and having more and more, buying things, buying toys. We often talk about this again in our common vernacular, boys and their toys, where a man basically spends his whole life acquiring stuff to put in his garage that he sometimes utilizes. But the idea being that it's the same kind of acquisition that we see among small children when they're obsessed with toys. Small children are obsessed with toys, they don't share them with anybody else, normally they have them all to themselves, they hoard them for themselves, they have this kind of greedy sense of it. And then what do we see in adulthood? The same kind of behavior in American culture kind of gets championed as if it's almost a virtue. This person, he has acquired so much stuff. It's like the ultimate is like if you have a detached garage, and you have so much stuff to fill that detached garage, it's like this is the ultimate pinnacle of manhood on the entire block. This guy has more stuff than anybody else. Inordinate affection, which is this attention to things of this earth.
