Why do the very things I loved about my spouse now drive me crazy?
People will often marry somebody for a major personality component. For instance, in my own marriage, I married my wife because she is predominantly a nurturer. And since I am not maybe as nurturing in my personality, I knew that I wanted to marry a woman who was going to be good with children, patient, kind, gentle, very feminine. I love her energy. But I didn't realize that that go with the flow, patience, and all these other characteristics of kind of a more artistic personality type, also have some corresponding weaknesses, such as the fact that that same person may not value being on time. They may not value having a schedule. They may not be great with time management. They may not be very thorough when it comes to budgeting. That predominant personality trait also corresponds to some weaknesses. And when people marry somebody, they usually pick one or two predominant characteristics that they see in that person that they latch on to, usually because it is the person's weakness. I choose somebody who has a strength that is my weakness. And ironically, they choose me, right, because they realize they have a weakness and a strength that I can uphold. And so my wife picks me because she goes, hey, he's motivated, he's a hard charger, he takes care of things, he gets things done, he's doing all these things. Well, guess what? There's all these corresponding weaknesses. He can be demanding. He can be a workaholic. He can burn the candle at both ends. He can not be good at time allocation for interpersonal things because he's so busy getting all the tasks done that he thinks that he needs to get done. So even in our dynamics there's strengths and there's weaknesses. But you pick those strengths and weaknesses based on how you think the other person is going to help you, and you find out in marriage, guess what, they've got some serious weaknesses.
