Where am I supposed to get my sense of worth if not from a relationship?
Both of these dynamics are incredibly unhealthy. They're rooted in deep psychological problems, and primarily the problem is twofold. Number one, where do you get your value from? And number two, where do you find your meaning in life? When people are looking for their value because of things, looks, money, intellect, social status, it is always fleeting and ego-driven, and it has to be chased in order to get the validation. And then the meaning and purpose in life is this idea that, well, if I just get married, or I have somebody who loves me, or we have some kids, I'm somehow going to create this magical rom-com life experience that's going to pick up where all my favorite movies ended, and we're just going to kind of dance happily into the night of the next thirty, forty years. And that's not reality either, because this life is incredibly difficult. Having a family, sustaining a long-term relationship, the dynamics of raising kids are all very stressful. So it is that we come to the third and really the only viable way to have a relationship. This is where both the man and the woman find their value in God. They find their value in God because they're created in his image, and because he loves them and wants to have a relationship with them. This is when they put Christ at the beginning of their life, the center of their life, the foundation of who they are and how they define themselves. They don't define themselves on their looks, intellects, social status, accomplishments, or anything else. They define themselves as being loved by God and being known by him. It's the words of Saint Paul, it is good that we know God, better yet that we are known by him. All of my value as a person comes from that internal filling that happens through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, where I become a complete person because I have God dwelling within me, because I know him, and most of all because I am loved and cherished by him. When that is taking place, then you can say, I am valuable. And you can look at somebody of the opposite gender and say, you're valuable also.
