Why does buying the thing I wanted never make me feel better?

There is nothing that we can gain. Even if we look at our bank account and see ten zeros behind whatever number, that will not make us feel whole and complete. We will not become people, true people in the sense that God created us, be filled with the Holy Spirit, because we have gold and silver and a 401k and all of these things. But we have such a proclivity for this. We have such a propensity to think, man, this is going to solve my problems if I just had more money. If I just got this next thing, if I just bought this one item, then when I have that thing, when I reach that milestone, when I hit that goal, when I have that in my possession, then something magical is going to happen. I am going to have this magical feeling. And the great irony is that when you watch children do this, they save up and up and up for buying a toy, they finally buy the toy, and then a few days later the toy is just sitting around the house. Material items do not have a very long lifespan. You save all kinds of money to buy something that you think is going to fulfill you, and then within a few days you become accustomed to it. It does not fill your soul, because your soul is immaterial. Material items cannot fill the immaterial. The soul is too big. The soul is like a little cosmos that has to contain all of God within it. It has to be able to hold God in it. So when you have a soul that is as large as our souls are, you cannot take something like a Porsche and put a Porsche in the cosmos and expect that it is going to fill up all of the cosmos. It does not do anything. It does not even make a dent.
